Dr. Don Barcome

Dr. Don Barcome

I thought that I should share this with our curling friends:

Unfortunately, my father, Dr. Barcome, has had another set-back. After not being able to attend last week's World Men's Curling Championships here in Grand Forks because of a very weak heart, we found out today that the tumor in his brain is cancerous.

He made it through a very perilous biopsy today, but is in SCCU for a day or 2, trying hard to regain where he was pre-op. His physicians are plotting their next move, trying to balance the reality of a bad heart with the needs of treating the tumor. The bottom-line is that his heart remains the main problem and that will determine how the cancer is fought, or not fought.

Your prayers for him to have the strength to get through this ordeal are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Don, Jr., Lori, Shirley Jo, James, Jeremy, Nathaniel, Anna, Earl & Brenda

Don my heart goes out to you, your father and the rest of your family. I will definitely keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You know the whole curling community is here for you.

Don,
You and the entire Barcome family are in our thoughts and prayers.

And congrats on a great Worlds. From all accounts - Rockin' the Ralph surpassed everyone's expectations. You and the organizing committee should feel proud of your accomplishments.

Don and Family,

You have our prayers and good thoughts. Keep the faith...

Jeff, Karen, Cale and Kelly

Thank you everyone, while your support is not surprising, it is greatly appreciated.

I jsut was able to finally talk with Doc, 2 hours ago he couldn't, and bamm! he can! We all know that he has bigger problems than his brain cancer, but just want to get him back home.

Your thoughts, prayers and friendship have helped me through my mother's death, my cancer and now my father's ordeals, all within the past 8 years. I sincerely believe that there is not a group of people as strong in their beliefs and as passionate in their friendships, as we find within curling...

My prayers will be with you. A lot of love, Donny.

Don, You, your Dad and your family are in our prayers. Thank You for the tremendous amount of work you and the others did for the worlds. What a great event! Job well done! Kent Bahr

We are bringing my Dad home today from the hospital, as that was & is his wish. He responded initially to treatments at the hospital and then the Rehab (which he built and guided for over 30 years), but a seizure a week ago has proved to be hard to come back from. We will be working with a local hospice to insure his care, needs and dignity are met with the same level of compassion that he provided for his patients throughout his career.

Thank you again for your kind words and prayers, they are an amazing source of strength.

Donny, our prayers are with you and your family in this trying time
no words can comfort you but your knowing the good that you and your father have done for the curling world and for all people should carry you
say hi to the rest of your family for us and remember take care of yourself

Don, I am sorry you and your family is going through this. Hospice is a wonderful oganization and I hope your Dad's next few days are comfortable. Please know that the curling world is praying for your whole family.

Doc Home from the Hospital. There really isn't anyting more for the hospital staff to do beyond care 7 Dad really wanted to be at home (& we want him here also), so:

What a great day. Doc declined an ambulance ride home (no surprise there), but that worried all of us about making sure he was comfortable. No worries at all, as he thoroughly enjoyed being out of the hospital and about in his community. Once home, Dad had a beer with some special-recipe tomato soup and a lot of love. All-in-all, a great day for one and all. The hospice had a hospital bed & O2 unit delivered, C&R Laundry put together a few sets of hospital-type linen sets & we are off and running!

He is so happy to be home, hasn't been this active (nor comfortable) since his seizure! Probably had as good a night's rest as he has had in a long time. We are ready for another day, thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers...

Don, Earl has kept us up to date on Doc and what is going on...........our thoughts and prayers are with him and the family.

Dad had a great day yesterday. We, along with dad's best friend (Dr. Jim Leigh - who is still seeing patients at age 81!), and our pups, took a little outdoor road trip down Olson Drive. He really enjoyed himself, as well as celebrating the 1st Day on our deck, for 2008, with a couple of beers (go figure!). He also had a visit from Mayor Brown, who presented him with a plaque showing our community's gratification for all that he has done.

Hi Don and Family....
Team Canada and all of those associated with the Canadian Curling Association send our best wishes to Dr. Don. We were hoping to meet with the Doc while we were in Grand Forks at the Worlds but that unfortunately could not happen.

The World event was a first class operation! It is one that all of those who were involved should be extremely proud of......espicially you, Donnie B. as you played such a major role in bring it to the Ralph. I know your dad would have loved to be there.

We will be following the information on Dr. Barcomb. I remember the three days locked in a room with him in Winnipeg, I believe, (many years ago) as we took a crack at bringing the World Rules up to speed. He's a great guy!

Again, best wishes from all your Canadian friends.
Jim
